Dickinsonia costata

Precambrian (Vendian - Ediacaran), Russia

Very large 50mm Dickinsonia on 90mm slab. Detail is actually better than the photograph shows since the wrinkled surface is difficult to photograph. This wrinkling is due to the presence of a bacterial mat on the sea surface when the animal died and is a distinctive feature of many, if not most, examples of fossil preservation in the Precambrian. It is suspected that the bacterial mat acted like a "death mask" that covered the animal and essentially cast it in the overlying sand. A really nice example of this form of preservation and the largest Dickinsonia we have had to date.
