Spindle Organism

Precambrian, Newfoundland, Canada

Excellent 1.5" CAST of organism on slab. These creatures from the famous Precambrian Ediacaran-type site in Newfoundland have never been formally named. Discovered by S.B. Misra in 1969, the Avalon Peninsula Fauna has turned out to be one of the oldest Ediacaran biotas known. This cast comes directly from a mold of the original and is hand-tinted to bring out detail.

Update: We were excited recently to receive an email from Dr. S.B. Misra himself regarding details of the discovery of the Mistaken Point Fauna! He pointed out that he made the discovery itself in 1967, not 1969 as is widely reported. He also directed us to the excellent website run by his son Shailesh called "Mistaken Point Fauna: The Discovery" which includes photos of the site and the fossils and even has HTML versions of some of Dr. Misra's original papers. We strongly encourage everyone to visit the Misra's website for a thorough discussion of the discovery and significance of this important Precambrian fauna and are honored to hear from its discoverer!
